What Is New at Lagoon, and When Does It Open in 2027?
What is the short answer?
What is new at Lagoon in Farmington, Utah, and when does it open in 2027? The big news is the J3 Grand Prix, a Formula 1-inspired single-rail coaster Lagoon says opens in July 2027, and the 2027 opening day has not been announced yet, so the 2026 season, which runs through November 8, is what is on the calendar right now.
I am David Supinger, Principal Broker of Home Click Real Estate, and I have lived in Farmington since the early nineties. Lagoon is the landmark people ask me about first when they are thinking about moving here, so here is everything announced so far, with where each fact came from.
What is the J3 Grand Prix?
Lagoon unveiled the J3 Grand Prix at an event on Saturday, October 3, 2026, and KUTV reported the details the next morning. It is billed as the first hot racer coaster in the United States, inspired by Formula 1 and built on a single rail.
The train is a single-file line of 10 race cars with one seat per row, which is how Lagoon can say everyone gets to be in the driver's seat. The ride has three inversions, twelve moments of airtime, which is the floating feeling when you lift out of the seat, and it is the park's first coaster with more than one launch.
It is set to open in July 2027. That is the only date Lagoon has attached to it, and it is a month, not a day. Lagoon has not said where in the park it will sit, how tall it is or how fast it goes, and I would not trust anybody who tells you those numbers until Lagoon does.
When does Lagoon open in 2027?
Not announced yet. Lagoon's own website did not carry a 2027 opening date when I checked it on 25 October 2026.
For a sense of timing, Lagoon announced last year that its 2026 season would open on March 28, weather permitting, as ABC4 reported. The 2026 season ends on November 8, and Frightmares, the fall Halloween event, has been running since September 11. Lagoon notes that those dates are subject to weather and other factors.
Remember the J3 Grand Prix is a July 2027 opening. If the new coaster is the reason for the trip, opening day in the spring will not be the day to ride it.
What else is new at Lagoon?
The other recent addition is the Nutcracker, a Screamin' Swing ride built by S&S Worldwide, which ABC4 reported was expected to open in spring 2026.
Before that, the biggest coaster addition was Cannibal in 2015, which lifts riders 208 feet and which Lagoon still calls its biggest and most thrilling coaster to date. The J3 Grand Prix is a different kind of ride. It is about racing and launches rather than height.
What is changing around Lagoon?
The bigger change for anyone who lives in Farmington is outside the gates. The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is building a pedestrian underpass under Park Lane that will connect the Farmington FrontRunner station with Lagoon. Park Lane between I-15 and US-89 was closed from July 7 to July 21, 2026, while crews built it.
The underpass is part of UDOT's Shepard Lane Improved project, a $151 million project that also built the new interchange at North Station Lane and is scheduled to finish by the end of 2026. UDOT says its schedules are weather-dependent and subject to change.
For a Farmington or Kaysville household, that means the train and the park are being tied together with a walking route instead of a crossing at a busy road. I wrote about the interchange half of that project separately, in whether the new Shepard Lane interchange is open.
How long has Lagoon been in Farmington?
Longer than most people guess. Lagoon's own history page tells it this way.
It opened on July 15, 1886, as Lake Park, on the shore of the Great Salt Lake. In 1899 it was moved east to Farmington, beside a nine-acre pond, which is where the name Lagoon came from. Shoot-the-Chutes, the park's first thrill ride, opened that same year.
The carousel was built in 1893 by the Herschell-Spillman Company and installed at Lagoon in 1906, and it still runs. The wooden Roller Coaster opened in 1921 and is one of the oldest operating wooden coasters in the world. Pioneer Village was added in 1976, when historic pioneer and Victorian buildings were moved onto the grounds. Colossus the Fire Dragon came in 1983, and Lagoon-A-Beach opened in 1989 in place of the original swimming pool. Wicked followed in 2007 and Cannibal in 2015.
That history is part of why Farmington feels the way it does. The park has been here for more than 125 years, and the town grew up around it.
How do you plan a Lagoon day from a home in Farmington or Kaysville, step by step?
1. Check the calendar first. Lagoon runs a season, not a year. Right now it is open weekends through November 8, then closed until the 2027 season opens on a date it has not announced yet.
2. Decide whether you are driving or riding the train. Farmington Station is the FrontRunner stop for the park. Once UDOT's underpass under Park Lane is finished, it connects the station and Lagoon directly.
3. Check for construction before you go. Until the Shepard Lane Improved project wraps up at the end of 2026, lane closures around Park Lane and I-15 still come and go. UDOT posts them ahead of time.
4. Know which ride you are going for. If it is the J3 Grand Prix, that is July 2027 at the earliest. If it is Cannibal or the Roller Coaster, any open day works.
5. Use Lagoon's own Directions and Parking page for the current entrance and lots. It is the only source I would trust for it.
What mistakes do people make about Lagoon when they move here?
Assuming it is open all year. It isn't. Someone touring homes in February sees a quiet park and a quiet Park Lane, and that is not what a Saturday in June looks like.
Mixing up the three names on the north side of town. Lagoon is the amusement park. Station Park is the shopping center. Farmington Station is the FrontRunner train stop. Locals mix the last two up all the time, me included.
Counting on the underpass before it is done. UDOT's target is the end of 2026, and UDOT itself says schedules depend on the weather.
Trusting a ride height or speed you read on a fan site. Lagoon has not published those numbers for the J3 Grand Prix. Wait for Lagoon.
What does living near Lagoon look like?
Here is the way I suggest a relocating buyer look at it. This is an example, not a client's story.
Say you are moving from out of state and you fly in for a weekend in February to see homes. Everything near Park Lane is quiet, and that is accurate for February. Before you write an offer on a home close to the park, I would have you come back past it on an open Saturday, or at least drive it at a time Lagoon is running, so you know both versions of the street. Some buyers love being a few minutes from the gates. Some would rather be across town. Either is a good choice, as long as it is made with both seasons in mind.
Farmington is easier to understand as a few different areas than as one town. Is Farmington a good place to live walks through each part of town, and the Farmington area page covers the homes street by street.
